Tarea Hall Pittman was a native of Bakersfield, Calif., a member of one of the pioneer families of Kern County. She received her B.A. degree from San Francisco State College and a Master of Social Welfare degree from the University of California, Berkeley. While attending Berkeley she began a career in radio, founding the program "Negroes in the news" with which she would be affiliated for many years.
